This policy explains what our website stores on your device and why. It is short, because the site is deliberately light: nothing optional is stored unless you say so. Read it alongside our Privacy Policy, which explains how we handle personal information more generally.
01 What are cookies?
A cookie is a small file that a website places on your device so that it can recognise your browser and remember something about your visit. Similar technologies, such as your browser’s local storage, do the same job in a slightly different way, and references to “cookies” in this policy include them.
02 How we use cookies
Our website sets no cookies of its own. Two things can be stored on your device:
- Your cookie choice. One entry in your browser’s local storage recording whether you accepted or rejected analytics. It is strictly necessary: without it we would have to ask you on every page — and it holds nothing that identifies you.
- Google Analytics cookies, only if you accept them. These help us count visits and see which pages are read. Google Analytics does not load, and sets nothing, until you accept.
We do not use advertising or targeting cookies, we do not share analytics data with anyone else, and we have switched off the parts of Google Analytics that would use your data for Google’s own advertising.
03 Your cookie choices
When you first visit, a short notice at the foot of the page asks whether you accept analytics cookies. Accept and Reject are equal choices, and closing the notice without choosing leaves analytics off. Your choice is kept for twelve months, after which we ask again; we also ask again if what we use changes.

If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we treat it as a refusal and do not show the notice. You can also block or delete cookies through your browser settings (your browser’s help pages explain how), and Google offers a browser add-on that switches off Google Analytics everywhere. The ICO’s guidance on cookies is at ico.org.uk.
04 Types of cookies we use
- Strictly necessary. Needed for the site to work as you would expect. Here, only the record of your cookie choice. These do not need your consent and cannot be switched off, but they hold no personal information.
- Analytics. Set only with your consent. They let us count visits and traffic sources and see which pages are most and least read, so that we can improve the site. The information is aggregated; we do not use it to identify you. If you refuse, we simply do not know you visited.
We do not use targeting or advertising cookies.

Other requests that set no cookies
Our typefaces load from Google Fonts and our photography from a content delivery network. Neither sets cookies, but each receives your IP address in order to send you the file, as any website resource does. Our host, Netlify, keeps standard server logs for security and to run the service.

We may update this Cookies Policy from time to time. When we do, we will post the updated version on this page and change the “last updated” date above.
